As we all know, the beginning stages of a student's graduation project truly begin their junior year of high school. Everyone hears of the project as a freshman, and thoughts begin to swirl around in students heads as their lives hastily reach their senior year. Choosing up-cycling is beneficial in many ways, I wanted to chose something that I could always use, something that would help me throughout my life. My dream career would be to be an interior decorator, which is quite an unrealistic job, so I am choosing to turn it into a hobby. Up-cycling by definition is the reuse of discarded objects or material in such a way as to create a product of a higher quality or value than the original. For example taking an old pallet and turning it into a coffee table. I will build several projects and make use of them throughout my home. In the future I hope to be able to do projects such as these and sell them, as an additional job for myself. After choosing what my project topic would, I started debating over the many research topics that relate to my project. I will be researching and writing on the now trending craze of up-cycling, discussing why it has become popular, and the economic and environmental benefits of doing such projects. Finally it became time to find a mentor to serve as a guide over me throughout my project. I found that many people in our community have taken part in up-cycling. The closest to home, is my neighbor and family friend Becky Cheek, she avidly finds potential up-cyclable materials and uses them to decorate her home, or to serve a purpose. Recently she found an outdated beat-up dresser at Goodwill and completely transformed it into what is now a stylish form of storage in her home. I am extremely excited to begin my project, and know that it will be a helpful skill to have throughout my life.
