Due to that the pallets are made for equipment style use they need to be cleaned and blemishes need to be removed. First, the pallets need to be measured to ensure that they are the correct length and width, because you don't want to take the time sanding wood that is going to be cut off later. With my dad's help, and his equipment we cut down the pallets by 8 inches in width. After we cut them we cleaned up the edges, to make sure that nothing was too sharp or dangerous. In addition, due to that the pallets have been used, some of the steeples and nails were beginning to slide outward just a little. I took a hammer and hit the ones that had began slipping out back into the wood. With help from my mentor, and borrowing her sander, I used a small hand sander to clean up the pallets. After I had gone over all of the wood with that, I went back over the places that were a little bit more tricky with sandpaper.
