When I got to the point where I could attach the back I had to find a way to connect the base and the back at an angle to provide a comfortable sitting. Rather than just standing the back straight up and down against the base, I added an additional board that was an inch and a half thick to the top of the base piece so that when I leaned the back up against it, it was at a slight angle. I had to drill pilot holes into the wood in order to securely attach the back so that it could support weight leaning up against it. A challenge I faced when doing this was that at one point when I had to rotate the chair onto its side to drill a screw in and broke one of the legs partially off. This took me back one step so I had to cut another chunk of the 2X4 to place in between the slats of the pallet, so that the leg would once again be intact. Then I went on to attach extra wood onto the legs that would provide support for the back of the chair so that it would not collapse when leaning against it.
